We are at Þingeyri - Erum komin á Þingeyri

Just a short blog today. It was a fabulous day but it is getting late and I am tired and it could be a long day ahead of us tomorrow. One nice visit today was to the Arctic Fox Centre at Súðavík. I will definitely write more on that tomorrow or the next  day. It is always nice to come to Ísafjörður. In all we biked 72 km today in 5 hours but we spent 3 hours exploring. Our highest point was the mountain route Gemlufallsheiði  280 m (we unfortunately start all these mountain routes at sea level since they are from one fjord to the other). Total Ascent was 550 m.

The fjords of Isafjarðardjup – Firðir Ísafjarðardjúps

img_3987.jpgWe started our biking at 10 in clam weather. It was a joyful ride through the fjords of Isafjarðardjup. Seals on the beach, birds and foxes. We made several stops to enjoy the fantastic landscape. This was the longest distance thus far 116 km and it took as 7 hours and 36 minutes. In all we stopped 2 hours and maintained an averages speed of 16km/h. The highest point was 133 m and the total ascent 535. We ended at Súðavík were my friends Oddny and Barði greeted us like kings.

The wind under my wings – Beggja skauta byr

img_3964.jpg

Today was a fantastic day biking. We started at 10:45 from Hólmavik and the first task was to climb up to 440 m.a.s.l. This mountain pass was higher than the one yesterday but the difference was that today we had the wind in the back instead of having it in our faces. We had a tail wind of 11 m/s. Once we had climb up to the highland it was a relatively easy ride to Reykjanes where we arrived at 18:00. After dinner we spent more than an hour in the pool. It was fantastic to bike the first fjord Ísafjord at the end of Isafjardardjup. We biked 90 km in five3 hours and 37 minutes, rested for one hour and 33 mínutes, greatest elevation 451 and total ascent 742. Photo is taken on the top of the mountain pass next to an old sheep herders shelter.

A windy and difficult day – Vindasamur og erfiður dagur

We were kept  awake until 4 in the night by our neighbours partying but woke up at 8 and took down the tents and were ready to go 9:50. Wind was against us as we crossed the first mountain pass (Svinadalur). It took us close to an hour to climb the 250 m we needed to go up. At the high point my sister Thelma caught up with us and we had the wind in our backs the next 25 km. Then we made a turn to cross the mountain pass Throskuldur, about 20 km long and rises to 380 m.a.s.l. The total climb was close to 900 m (since the road goes up and down) all this with winds of 14 m/s in our faces (40-50 km/h). We finally made it to Hólmavik at 18:00 and went straight to the local swimming pool. After a good dinner at a local restaurant we settled in to a B&B place. A difficult but interesting day behind us.
